JAPAN TOUR AUGUST 2003 GERMANY / JAPAN TOUR JUNE 2003

Thank you to all the friends and sponsors who gave us money for Mohamed to have this amazing experience in Japan. On Wed. Aug. 20th the Wynrs players took part in a fantastic tournament at the same venue where Germany prepared for last years world cup final in Yokohama. Not only did we win the tournament but Mohamed won the GOLD MEDAL for the 1v1 competition. In addition to this he was chosen along with Isaac Brealey for the DREAM TEAM. An absolutely outstanding achievement considering that the hosts Kanagawa FA had some of their best players available for the age group 1991. Both Mohamed and Isaac are the 1992 age group.

TRIP DIARY
15 Aug - Arrived after 11 hour flight to Narita airport. Then took 2 hour bus ride to Yokohama City (8 million people) to drop boys to home stay.
16 Aug - Awoke to Auckland type weather!! So much rain that they had to cancel the first days soccer. Boys not at all disappointed because the host families took them shopping and treated them like kings. In the evening we saw Marinos beat Tokyo Verdy 2-0 at the Yokohama 2002 World Cup Final Stadium.
17 Aug - First games against YSCC. Wynrs won all their games and all the 1v1 competition. A goal feast for all the players and a first time experience on the sand surfaces that are so typical all over Japan.

The Japanese players who visited New Zealand earlier in the month came to Yokohama to catch up with their new found Kiwi friends and then after the games they took us to Chinatown in Yokohama for a delicious meal. Back to the Kamakura Hotel, a very beautiful and peaceful retreat for Japanese businessmen!!! Thank goodness for the traditional Japanese baths "Daiyokujou" in the basement of the hotel which helped to calm the Kiwi testosterone.

18 Aug - Visit to the 1000 year old Budhist Temple in Kamakura (famous for the shrines) via the best organic icecream store in Japan!! In the afternoon the players travelled to Chigasaki by train where they had a tight battle against a strong Wynrs Japan team and finally won 1-0. Mario scored on a rebound after Caleb took a local defender to the milk bar and hammered a left footer onto the post.

23 Aug - Big game against the Sanfrecce under 14 first team. Best team in Japan for this age group. Wynrs team slightly intimidated by their enormous height prior to the game with the majority of our players being 2 or 3 years younger. However, once on the field the Wynrs boys rose to the occasion magnificently and through a combination of brilliant defence and a superb goal from Mohamed held the Sanfrecce team to 1-1 at half time. In the second half, the heat and the fact that Wynrs had one sub and San Frecce 6 subs took it`s toll and although the Wynrs boys never gave up, the final score was 4-1 in Sanfrecce`S FAVOUR.

Following a quick dip in the nearby river it was back to the host families for dinner and to prepare for the Obon Festival. This festival happens annually in Japan so it was lucky that we happened to be passing through on this pacticular day. All the boys, coaches and mothers got into the spirit of things getting dressed in Yukata - traditional Japanese costumes and joining their host families in the dance performed by each local area.

24 Aug - Transfer to Nagoya followed by a very quick trip to Nike Town and then another frantic rush to the Shinkansen train - this time not Anna and Lisa`s fault - Made it with 2 minutes to spare!

25 Aug - Clinics with Kariya Football Association

26th Aug - Kiwi Kick International Tournament. - Finally the day arrived that all the players had been waiting for. After only 1 defeat on tour so far the big guns of Nagoya Gramous 8 were ready to change that. Was last years draw and win to the Wynrs team in Munich a fluke? Would Japan U-12 National Player, Tsuzuki make the difference for the local team.

The stage was set for another outstanding day of competition at the amazing Kariya sports Club facility. The local organiser provided 2 teams, J-League team Nagoya 3 teams and Wynrs 1 team. Round Robin competition with the top 2 to play off for the final.

Game 1 - Wynrs v Grampus 8 III 8-0 (Goal scorers Caleb, Mario, Mohamed, Mario, Joel, Mario, Caleb, Mario)
Game 2 - Wynrs v Kariya SC 1 7-4 (Goal scorers Alexei, Caleb, Mario, Mario, Mario, Joel, Mohamed)
Game 3 - Wynrs v Kariya SC 2 6-0 (Goal scorers Joel, Caleb, Joel, Alexei, Isaac, Isaac)
Game 4 - Wynrs v Nagoya 1 4-3 (Goal scorers Isaac, Mohamed, Alexei, Robert)
Game 5 - Wynrs v Nagoya 2 3-2 (Goal scorers Mohamed, Alexei, Mario)
With 5 wins the Wynrs boys qualified for the final. As expected Nagoya Grampus 8 team 1 were the other finalists. Player of the tournament, Mohamed, opened the scoring for Wynrs. The score remained that way until half time despite several chances to equalise for Nagoya. In the 2nd half an earlyequaliser shook the Kiwis into top gear. Mohamed smashed home a brilliant shot from long range to put Wynrs ahead. Further domination from the visitors saw Mohamed cmplete his hattrick and a very tired NA team could leave the field victorious in 32C heat.
Final Wynrs 3 v Nagoya Grampus 8 (Team 1) 1 (half time 1-0)
27th Aug - Free day for kids with their host families.
28th Aug - Kariya FA organized another Wynton Rufer Soccer Clinic. The Wynrs team played 4 teams tournament. Wynrs won the tournament, but the team lost the game against the Kariya FA selection team.
3-3 (25 min)
0-1 (extra time)

29th Aug - We visited the Toyota stadium where Wynrs Japan is planning the Kiwi Cup International Tournament 2005.

Kiwi boys showed Haka

Arrived from Munich all quite tired. Again a fantastic reception from the Chigasaki Football community. We had a 1 v 1 tournament against them against them as well as a 6 team tournament. 3 teams from Imajuku FC ,3 teams from FC 504 and 2 teams from Wynrs. Joseph, Godwin, Dylan and Simon only had 4 members. First Godwin and Dylan made it to the semi- final in 1 v 1 with 2 Japanese boys. In the Kiwi Kick Godwins team won 3 and drew 2 so missed the final. The other Wynrs team won 4 and drew 1. They played 10 minute games. Dylan and Godwin won their 1 v 1 semi and then Godwin won the final by Golden Goal after 1 1/2 min. In the final against the team from Imajuku it was 0_0 . Golden Goal. From a side line pass in Loic flicks the ball over all the heads. Rueben at the far post cracks home a smacking header and the boys go ballistic!!!! Brilliant finish with every Kiwi receiving the latest GAMEBOY!!!!!!!!!Plus other gifts. They all got Gold Medals in Munich too. We then went to the hot pools with all the J. kids. That was followed by an awesome dinner with everyone including games between the Japanese and Kiwi kids.
