SMALL WHITES NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
02/10/2008
The
long awaited 9th
Grade
Small Whites National Tournament is round the corner
and as the WYNRS FC Coach Daniel Ball is making his
final preparations for the big event, he reflects on
the starting trials to make the team, the team
training sessions and a fruitful pre-tournament.
The tournament is due to take place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Keith Hay Park Mt Roskill. Starting 9am.
“After Miya, Leigh and myself decided on the current WYNRS Academy players to take part in the trials to make the final 12 for the 9-aside tournament, I had only been in the country for about 2 weeks, and was absolutely delighted to be given this opportunity, I had never met the trial'ists before but knew we had a couple of weeks training before I had to make the tough decision for the final 12”
“In the training sessions we have worked on all aspects of football, from individual ball control and space awareness to technical team movements and playing together. We even worked on goal keeping as we hadn’t had a player who had played in goal before. As I am also a professional goal keeping coach, I believe goal keeping is the hardest position to play and one or two sprung into mind who were able to play there, but again that was hard decision to make as most of the players were good out field players too”

“We had the good fortune in participating in the Papakura Tournament when we got invited last minute, it was a good experience for the team, I decided to let the players play in what positions they wanted, this gives them a opportunity to play a competitive game in a position they have never played before and also gives me the opportunity to see if a player has more to offer than what I have already seen”
My final 12 players I have a lot of confidence in, I have worked with this age group in England, Holland and the USA, and have to say I have been very impressed with their attitude from day one and due to that great attitude they have progressed very well in a short space of time. The team I feel as also gelled well together and I just can’t wait for our football do the talking”
