WYNRS FC BEST TEAM IN NEW ZEALAND
06/10/2008
National Small Whites Tournament
Wynrs FC 9th Grade team took home the championship making them the best team in New Zealand. Not only did they win the tournament, they won it in an all time record breaking style, scoring a total of 47 goals in the 9 games and only conceding 3.
The team went away the winning best attacking team with Sarpeet Singh named player of the tournament final and David Stewart collecting the golden boot with 14 goals.
The first 3 games on Friday saw a bright and successful start to the campaign, a 5-0 win followed by a 3-1 win over the current holders Three Kings and a 10-0 win over Three Kings B. The next day was as just as entertaining as the last with a 9-0, 5-0 and 4-2 win.
Sundays final day saw us drawn against Hibiscus Coast in the quarter finals. Wynrs were soon off to another bright start to the day with a 5-0 win.
The semi final saw Wynrs face the 3rd ranked team Papakura with the 2nd ranked team Birkenhead Blazers take on 4th ranked East Coast Bays. A close encounter with high gusts of wind made for a difficult game against Papakura. The wind proved difficult for both teams, making it difficult for Wynrs to play the beautiful football that they had been playing all tournament. With close opportunities not taken by Wynrs and still 0-0 after extra time, it was down to penalties. Skipper Ryan Napper, Thomas McCloy, Sarpeet Singh, Callum McCowatt and David Stewart all stood up to see Wynrs go through to the final 4-2 with a fine save by Wynrs keeper Justin Bailey.

A change of field with a different wind direction alowed the Wynrs team to get back to playing their football in the final against Birkenhead Blazers. A 2-0 win secured the first ever 3 Kings National 9th Grade championship for any Wynrs team.
Coach Daniel Ball reflects on what was an entertaining and fruitful campaign.
I am so happy for the players, it has been a pleasure to coach these kids and they have come away with a lot in such a short space of time, their attitude is great, they enjoy their football and they got their rewards for their great efforts
All the other teams in the tournament had been together for a couple a years, and we had only 9 weeks to get to know each other and learn how to play with each other. The basic European and WYNRS football philosophy was a big factor especially when it went down to the penalties, but the players managed to take that big step in ability and learn how to play as a team.
They enjoyed their football, they really worked hard in every game and were eventually rewarded with what they deserved, we worked a lot on team movements in the past weeks and everything we worked on, they did so well in the games, the corners, through balls, timed runs as well as marking and pressure, they all kept their concentration through the games.
