ONEHUNGA PHOENIX 11TH GRADE BIG WIN
26/04/2010
Congratulations to all 3x 10th grade teams,2x 11th
Premier teams,12th premier,13th Metro,14th Metro,15th
Metro on winning your games on the weekend. Heres a
game report of the 11th grade Onehunga Sports teams
game against Western Springs 11th grade team. Andrew
Clark reports...
The season finally got underway for the Onehunga Phoenix on Saturday with a fairly resounding
10-0 win over WSAFC 11P2 – Torres.
Whilst team Phoenix have played some very impressive football in their pre-season games, it was time to put it all together in the grading round to secure a place in the championship grade. Having to sit-out the first week of the draw with a bye further heightened the desire to
kick-off the season proper.
Once underway the Phoenix quickly settled into the attractive passing game they have exhibited to date and starved the WSAFC opposition of any meaningful position. The passing and movement was assured with the team moving as a cohesive unit. A number of chances
were created early only to be thwarted by the WSAFC goalie: Robbie Mcfarlane or grazing the goal framework. Team Phoenix finally broke the deadlock in about the 10th minute when a well taken Daniel Clark corner was superbly headed into the net by Conner Shimoda who lost his marker in the area and rose with power to direct the ball into the goal from about 6 metres. The Phoenix piled on the pressure with Keiren, Grace, Leon, Rhys and Dan all going close and being denied what seemed like certain goals. The wall of emerald green and white hoops was finally broken again with about 8 minutes left in the 1st half and further goals from Leon, Dan
and an own goal saw the Phoenix go into the half time break with a 4-O lead. The second half was more of the same, the Phoenix dominating possession playing an attractive passing game with width and vision as they sliced the opposition open with some
simple triangles. Most pleasing was the fact that three of the six second half goals came from our wingbacks / fullbacks pushing forward and supporting in attacking positions resulting in well taken goals to Mathew, Nani and Rhys. All and all a very good start for team Phoenix although coach Clark (ever the task master) said in the post game team talk that whilst very happy, he thought at times the team looked like they were holding back. The post match talk and player of the day presentation descended into mayhem when the kids learnt that this years “Player of the Day” [POD] award was not only a stunning trophy to take home for the week, but a packet of the much prized Topps Match Attack Cards. The player of the day selection was challenging with very good performances all-round but in the end Conner Shimoda was confirmed as the 1st recipient for season 2010 for some quality play out wide. Special thanks to Eric van den Hooven and Trevor Bright who each refereed 1⁄2 the game each in a very assured and controversy-free manner. All in all the game was played in excellent spirit
and the WSAFC kids never gave up despite the mounting score, whilst the Phoenix kids displayed humility and respect throughout, even with classmates and neighbours in the opposition. One of the more interesting moments of the 2nd half was when a shot from Dan Clark, that
initially looked goal bound, dipped over the bar and knocked flat his unsuspecting little brother Cam (who was playing behind the goal), knocking him out momentarily. After some initial concerns Cam was back on his feet after a couple of minutes and fighting fit by the end of the game wanting a slice of the POD action, for his own exploits on the adjacent field immediately
prior to the game! Whilst team Phoenix are sure to have more testing encounters through the season this was a
very good start. And most importantly we had fun whilst playing our own brand of “Total Football” that drew plenty of positive comments from the opposition spectators and other bystanders.
GOAL SCORES:Conner Shimoda (2), Daniel Clark (2), Leon van den Hooven (2)
Mathew Hunter, Nani Jusuci, Rhys Caples, OG.
PLAYER OF THE DAY:Conner Shimoda
